Pettibone and an Award

Dr. Marian Pettibone at her retirement ceremony in 1978, holding a glass vase etched with a scale worm, the group of marine worms of which she was the leading expert. She was a curator at the museum for 15 years until she was required to retire at 65. She spent another 20 years after retirement continuing her research on polychaetes. The vase was passed down to her nephew, Ned Swanson, who looks at it daily on his mantle.
